Ocean Clean Wash

Following on from discussions during our #ReThinkPlastic workshop at the 2019 annual congress, IFBSO has formed an environmental working group with the initial aim to create a standard coordinated message/display which all IFBSO members can use at their shows. The workshop was led by Peter Franklin who recently attended the first Plastic Health Summit in Amsterdam as a follow-up to the IFBSO workshop and a summary of this event can be found in his blog post.

Many of our members are making great progress in promoting environmental issues via targeted displays, by featuring educational programmes, cutting out single use plastic to innovative ideas how to cut down on waste by introducing specialist recycling measures. One of the best examples of the latter was the free offer of 11,000 sqm of show carpet following the Biograd Boat Show which has now found new uses in industrial buildings, on outdoor terraces and even as ground cover/protection around olive trees.

In the meantime, we are happy to share links to the most innovative and interesting websites dealing with environmental issues generally and initiatives to curb the use of plastic or reduce plastic waste via our news pages. Our current selection includes the following:

  • Cleaner Marinas, cleaner oceans - the Seabin Project
  • Clean laundry, dirty ocean - Ocean Clean Wash
  • Sustainable clothing made from plastic rubbish - Wearable Trash
  • Strangely beautiful, an artist whose medium is plastic waste and consumption - Thomas Deininger - Trash Artist
  • Plastic capture in the great Pacific Garbage Patch - The Oceancleanup
  • Are biodegradable plastics environmentally-friendly - The myth of recycling
  • The Interceptor is The Ocean Cleanup’s answer for river plastic waste. It is the first scalable solution to prevent plastic from entering the world’s oceans from rivers.- The Interceptor
  • Building boats of all shapes and forms out of NFC (Natural Fibre Composites) without sacrificing neither performance nor durability. - GREENBOATS
  • And finally - breathtaking, moving, harrowing! Another appeal by Sir Richard Attenborough to consider the impact of our way of life on the environment. Prepare to weep. - Seven Worlds One Planet
