All the fun of the fair

Despite the fact that many of the year's early boat shows are taking place in the rather cold, Northern European winter climate, the atmosphere in the halls is anything but chilly. Visitors are happy to escape the cold, rain or snow and immerse themselves in dreams of leisure time pursuits in sunnier, warmer climes. Whether looking into purchasing a boat, board, diving equipment, accessories or gathering information and ideas for the next holiday, for many it is a lovely day out and welcome break from the daily grind. And it is encouraging to see so many young people at the shows, often energetically trying out new activities and we all hope that they will become lifelong watersports enthusiasts and thus the exhibitors, buyers, sponsors and promoters of tomorrow.

In general, most of our members' events reported very positive exhibitor and visitor feedback as expectations and opportunities were balanced with product offers and relevant visitors well matched. Add to this a professional, knowledgeable and highly motivated management team, great customer service, a well appointed venue, entertainment and some glamour and enough (resonably priced) opportunities to indulge an empty stomach and you have some of the basic ingredients for a successful and enjoyable show.

However, our members appreicate that one cannot take customer loyalty and positive visitor numbers for granted and strive for further improvement with each show edition. IFBSO is on hand to help member organisations mount cost-effective, quality exhibitions for the recreational marine industry around the world, by providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and the development of co-operation between members. We are currently preparing for our annual Congress in June which provides many opportunities for members to gather new ideas and share their experiences and examples of best practice.

Personally, I am looking forward to a family holiday on Australia's Gold and Sunshine Coasts first, where I intend to dabble in as many water sports as time permits so that I can remind myself how lucky we are to work in such a fabulous industry!
